Ireland win SMPT World Cup again

Ireland retained their SMPT “Bowls Trader” World Cup championship title at Chelmsford yesterday beating England in the final. Ireland came top of Group A after wins against Wales and the Isle of Man. England finished top of Group B after beating Scotland and a Rest of the World team while Scotland also qualified for the semi-finals as the best runners-up. A tight Group C saw Belgium, Sweden & Norway all winning one game and losing one game each. A big win for Belgium against Norway saw Belgium claim the semi-final place. In the semi-finals Ireland swept to victory against Scotland while England saw off the challenge of Belgium. The hotly contested final produced four close games but three went Ireland’s way as Mark Beattie beat James Trott 11-9, Nathan Haire beat Ed Sawbridge 9-7 and P.J Gallagher beat Mitchell Young 10-8. England’s only win saw Peter Roberts beat Glenn Harvey 12-8.
