Ryan Fox wins Bure League Singles title

Ryan Fox is the new Bure League Singles Champion after winning all his games at Halvergate on Thursday evening. The line-up on the night comprised of defending champion Jason Woods of Bob Carter, John Jeffery of Watton Expendables, Richard Moore of Hevingham, young Alfie Woods of Bob Carter and Ryan Fox representing Halvergate. John Jeffery got off to a bright start beating Richard Moore by 11-4 while Ryan Fox defeated Alfie Woods by 12-2. Session two saw defending champion Jason Woods in action against Ryan Fox. These were the two bowlers expected to dominate the nights bowling with the result of their clash likely to determine who would emerge as the champion. Fox took two shots on the opening end and Jason Woods replied with two of his own on the second end to level the game. A fascinating game of bowls then followed with Fox just one shot ahead with two ends remaining. Singles on both of these ends saw Fox clinch a vital win by 8-5 and put him on course for the title. Meanwhile on the other mat youngster Alfie Woods was delighting those watching with his usual entertaining style of play against John Jeffery. Leading 8-3 with two ends to go Alfie withstood a late comeback by John Jeffery to clinch an 8-7 win which will be encouraging for this young up and coming bowler. Session three saw the two big guns start to rack up what could be important shots. Ryan Fox beat John Jeffery by 13-1 while Ryan Fox beat Richard Moore by 18-1. In the fourth session Jason Woods continued to collect shots beating John Jeffery by 13-5 while Richard Moore got on the board beating Alfie Woods by 8-2. Going into the last session Ryan Fox knew that even a draw against Richard Moore would earn him the title while Jason Woods knew that he needed to beat his young son Alfie and hope that Fox would slip up against Moore. Jason Woods gradually pulled away in his match against Alfie Woods on his way to a 13-1 win while keeping a close eye on the match being played on the other mat between Fox and Moore. The Hevingham player made a promising start leading 3-2 after four ends while Fox struggled to find his usual consistent form. This would have raised Jason Woods hopes of retaining his title but Fox rose to the challenge taking two shots on both the fifth and sixth ends to lead 6-3 with two ends remaining. Richard Moore took a single on the penultimate end to keep the outcome still in doubt but a single on the final end for Ryan Fox saw him clinch a slender 7-4 win to become the new Bure Singles Champion leaving Jason Woods as the runner-up. NCSMBA Membership Secretary Teresa Goldsmith presented the prizes with Bure Competition Secretary Selwyn Goldsmith thanking Halvergate SMBC for hosting the event.
