Watton Expendables reach Norwich Cup Final

Watton Expendables are through to the Norwich Cup final after a 35-28 win at Harling in their semi-final clash. Harling won the first three ends to move into an early 6-0 lead but Expendables won eleven of the next thirteen ends to establish a 20-11 lead and take control of the match. The seventeenth end gave Harling hope as they took five shots to reduce Watton’s lead to 20-16. But the eighteenth end, on which Watton had chosen to play the second of their three Wild Cards, left the home side seriously adrift again as Expendables took a four which counted as eight shots. Watton now led by 28-16 but Harling kept plugging away and a five on end 20 cut the deficit to 28-22. After then it was pretty much even steven with Watton Expendables keeping the game tight to earn a place in the final against either holders Wymondham or Thetford. Watton Expendables team comprised of Chris, Simon & Elaine Willies, Chloe & Kacy Suffolk, Robin Amos, Pix Hyam and Robert Howlett. Harling’s eight were George Hume, Colin & Jill Hayman, Paul Rogers, Linda Chilvers, Nigel Battley, John Davies and Lorretta Smith. Bob Carter moved top of the Bure Cup table with a 5-0 home win against Hevingham, Carter’s second maximum home win in a row. A great first half for Carter saw Jean Woods, Nigel Willard & Jason Woods win 24-7 and Alfie Woods. Morgan Warnes & AJ Pye winning 25-6. Hevingham improved in the second half with Pat Saunders, Lesley Turner & Brian Turner in impressive form beating Gavin Gray, Jack Gray & Gary Best 18-7. On the other mat Hevingham’s newest players Paul Speak and Peter Grundy were skipped by Selwyn Goldsmith but they were unable to stop Melvin Woods, Simon Warnes & Jack Pye winning by 19-10. Despite that the away side were heartened by the positive second half which saw them score a total of 28 shots against Carter’s 26 with their newest recruits learning much from the experience. Thetford’s 8-2 away win against Watton in the Afternoon Winter League moved them to within a point of leaders Diss. Peter Harvey’s triple won 13-7, Neil Thomas won by 13-9 and Glynis Holbrook won by 12-7. Other games saw Hingham win 6-4 at Shropham Red, with Graham Tweed winning 15-13 and Pauline Wilson winning 16-7, and Hingham winning 9-1 at home to Shropham Red with Mike Ottaway’s triple winning 18-13, John Chapman’s triple winning 17-7 and Graham Tweed’s triple winning 11-10.
