East Coast Triples & Pairs Week an outstanding success

The East Coast Triples & Pairs Week at the famous Potters Resort produced some great bowls with 48 triples contesting the main event in the International Arena. After reeling off eleven straight wins in their group Derbyshire’s Maria Kitchener, Ivan Lunn & Richard Kitchener met Norfolk’s Billie Barker, Will Townsend & Melvyn Barker in the semi-finals. Barker’s triple had produced ten wins in their group losing just their final group game. Kitchener’s triple drew first blood but Barker’s triple won the next four ends on their way to victory and a place in the final. Steve Easter of Norfolk led for North Yorkshire’s Judith Fearns and Chris Prendergast and they won their hotly contested group with eight wins, two draws and one loss. In the semi-finals they faced Brenda Waling, Charles Waling & Derek Retchless of Cambs who had produced nine wins, one draw and one loss to win their group. The Cambs triple won the first end but failed to score again as Prendergast and his triple secured their place in the final. On the first end of the final Steve Easter drew onto the jack with his first wood on the opening end but a great bowl by Will Townsend put Melvyn Barker’s triple in control of the end. This story was continued as Billie Barker, Will Townsend & Melvyn Barker all produced key shots and solid bowling when required to take two shots on each of the first four ends. With Barker’s triple in this kind of form there was little Chris Prendergast’s triple could do as the Norfolk triple built up their lead and won the match. There was some consolation for the losing triple as they won the last end to gain great applause from an appreciative audience who warmly responded to the humour displayed by the losing skip. Chris certainly gave a valuable lesson in the way the great game of bowls should be played when the tide turns firmly against you. In the third place play-off game Maria Kitchener, Ivan Lunn & Richard Kitchener fought back to beat Brenda Waling, Charles Waling & Derek Retchless. The East Coast Pairs saw both semi-finals won by just one shot. Dennis Mack & Jeff Branch beat Shropham’s Peter Walker & Andy Rawnsley and Susan Alderson of Kent & Violet Gabot of North Yorks beat Judith Fearns & Chris Prendergast. In the final Dennis Mack & Jeff Branch beat Susan Alderson & Violet Gabot but the result was in doubt until the final wood. Judith Fearns & Chris Prendergast beat Peter Walker & Andy Rawnsley in the 3rd Place Play-Off game after going into the last end level on shots. The Presentation Ceremony was conducted by Potter’s entertainer Rachel Baade with Event Organisers Teresa & Selwyn Goldsmith of the NCSMBA. Rachel told the guests how impressed she was by the fantastic atmosphere in the International Arena during the East Coast Triples Final, in fact the entire week was brilliant with bowlers having a great time enjoying the bowls and the superb entertainment in the evenings.
