"I am a Norfolk man and Glory in being so." Horatio Nelson

Valiant effort by Forncett but Wymondham emerge triumphant

Forncett are well known for some giant killing performances in the Norwich Cup over the years and after defeating South Norfolk League giants Hempnall in the last round they entertained Breckland League giants Wymondham in the quarter-finals. The visitors were determined not to be the latest victims though and gave themselves a huge boost blowing Forncett away in the opening triples session. Billie Barker, Brian Saunders & Chris Mann stormed to a 14-3 win against Peter Lock’s triple while Lauren Swann, Melvyn Barker & Mark “Sparky” Linsdell beat Rebecca Humphreys’ triple 9-2. Forncett immediately hit back in the first pairs session to let Wymondham know that this was to be no easy ride. Bryan Preece & Tony Ottewell beat Norfolk Squad players John Jeffery & Jon Sparham 12-7 while Linda Preece & Martin Humphreys levelled the match beating Roger Steele & Debbie Sparham 8-6. The triples came back on for their second games and this time honours were even with Chris Mann’s Wymondham triple winning again beating Rebecca Humphreys’ triple 12-3 and Mike Smail, Jan Smail & Peter Lock replying for Forncett with an impressive 13-5 win against Mark Linsdell’s triple. This left the match tied at 6-6 on points with one session of pairs remaining but Wymondham 12 shots to the good. The visitors knew that a repeat of the first pairs session would send them crashing to a shock defeat but John Jeffery & Jon Sparham dug deep to record a vital 8-4 win against Linda Preece & Martin Humphreys. Bryan Preece & Tony Ottewell would have needed a huge score to save the day for Forncett but despite winning their second game of the night by 7-3 against Roger Steele & Debbie Sparham it was not enough to stop Wymondham winning on shots by 64-52 after the match finished level on points at 8-8. Never-the-less Forncett can be proud of a valiant effort against one of Norfolk’s finest sides.
