David Lamb's rink reach quarter-finals of National Mixed Fours

The first of the National Championship events took place at Solihull IBC with three Norfolk Mixed Fours taking part. Jenny Walker of Thorpe Marriott and Donna Lamb, Keith Cooke & David Lamb of Halvergate were drawn in Group 11 but got off to an inauspicious start losing by 9-5 to Mike Dooley’s East Sussex rink. But they quickly got back on track beating John Parnell’s Devon rink 11-9 and followed that with an 11-5 win against Jim Tingle’s Worcestershire rink. This was good enough to earn them the runner-up spot in the group behind Devon and earn a place in the first knock-out round, the last 32, against Chris Drage, Suzanne Gunter, Dave Ekins and Chris Weston of Northamptonshire. Lamb’s rink proved far too hot for Chris Weston’s rink to handle as they stormed to a 15-4 win. Suffolk’s Bob Cousins, Gloria Smith, Margaret Hastings and David Baker made their exit at this stage losing 10-6 to Tom Clough’s Hampshire rink. In the last 16 stage David Lamb’s four found themselves up against a rink they knew well, Linda Lambert, Steve Killington, Mo Binstead & Anthony Fautley of Essex. They were the last Essex rink still in the competition but soon there were none as David Lamb’s rink won the game by 10-8 to progress into the quarter-finals where they would face West Mids’ Emily Weaver, Steve Bailey, Tracey Bailey & Dave Room. Unfortunately that would prove to be the end of the road for the Norfolk rink as they crashed to a 16-1 defeat against the West Midlanders. In the semi-finals the West Mids rink lost by 9-7 to North Yorkshire’s Jill Newsome, Janet Clarke, Joseph Newsome & David Newsome while Herefordshire’s Shirley Cox, Kate Williams, John Mills & Joe Loveys beat Avon’s Derek Jones, Deb Jones, Dianne Rundle & David Sawyer by 9-8. North Yorks went on to win the title beating the Herefordshire rink 12-6 in the final. Norfolk’s other qualifiers failed to get through the group stages. Ann Biddulph & Angela Bond of County Council, playing with Halvergate’s Steven & Robbie Lamb, endured a torrid time in Group 3. They lost their opening game by 11-2 against Anthony Fautley’s Essex rink before losing by 13-5 to Chris Hopkins’ Northants rink. Their last game was closer but resulted in an 8-6 loss against Steve Puttock’s Hampshire rink. Hampshire won the group with Essex in second place. Claire, Lewis & Owen Cranston of County Council, playing with Hempnall’s Kerry Greenacre, failed to qualify from Group 8 which saw Rob Edmunds’ Surrey rink finish first with Roger Hawks’ West Sussex rink as runner-up.
