Carter beaten by Halvergate in Norwich Cup thriller

After beating Bob Carter 10-6 in the first leg of their Norwich Cup semi-final, Halvergate knew that they faced a tough battle in the second leg at Drayton if they were to claim a place in the final against Wymondham who had beaten Forncett in the other semi-final. Halvergate suffered the start they did not want as Bob Carter wiped away Halvergate’s advantage immediately winning both opening triples games to level the aggregate score at 10-10. Jean Woods, Robert Howlett & Simon Willies stormed to a 13-2 win against Robbie Lamb’s triple while Elaine Willies, John Turner & Melly Woods emerged with a 7-6 win against Ryan Fox’s triple. The pairs then came on for the second session and Morgan Warnes & Gary Best scored another Carter win by beating Kerry Greenacre & Keith Cooke by 11-6. But the aggregate scores remained tied as Halvergate’s Donna & David Lamb beat Nigel Willard & Jason Woods by 10-5. After the interval the triples returned to the mats with Carter hopeful of repeating their opening session success. But this time it was Halvergate’s triples who delivered the goods with John Norfolk, Robin Amos & Ryan Fox beating Simon Willies’ triple by 12-6 while Keith Baker, Ray Lamb & Robbie Lamb won a tight game against Melly Woods’ triple by 6-5 to restore Halvergate’s four point aggregate lead with just the last session of pairs to play. Both pairs games were tight but Halvergate got the win they required courtesy of Kerry Greenacre & Keith Cooke who beat Nigel Willard & Jason Woods by 7-6. Carter’s Morgan Warnes & Gary Best beat Donna & David Lamb 7-4 in the other game but Halvergate had won on aggregate by 18-14 and can now plan for a final showdown against Breckland League giants Wymondham in the two leg final.
