Defending champions edge past last seasons finalists

A repeat of last season's final saw defending challenge cup champions Bob Carter visit Wymondham in the first round with the match going down to the last end. In the singles Bob Carter's Gary Best was in good form to win 6-14 against Wymondham's Chris Mann but Jack Pye replied to beat Jason Woods 8-6. The fours saw a win a piece as Jack Marshall, Melvyn Barker, Debbie Sparham and Mark Linsdell beat Elaine Willies, Nigel Willard, John Turner and Melly Woods 11-5 while a win for Rob Howlett, Steve Bridge, Morgan Warnes and Simon Willies by 5-10 against Steve Easter, John Jeffery, Simon Warnes and Jon Sparham gave Bob Carter a 6-4 half time lead. The singles came out and again Carter got the upper hand as Best recorded his second big win of the night beating Pye 4-14 while a perfect last bowl by Woods gave him an 8-9 win against Mann. Jon Sparham's four in the second session recovered brilliantly from dropping a five on the first end against Melly Woods' block to then win six of the remaining seven ends to win 16-6 and give Wymondham hope as a win by two shots in the other fours match was all that was needed to draw the match. Simon Willies and Mark Linsdell fours were involved in a tight match with only six shots scored over seven ends with the scores tied at 3-3 going into the last end. A bad last end by Wymondham eventually saw them drop a four in what was an entertaining and close fought tie with Bob Carter ending up 6-14 winners and progress into the semi finals.
