Round 3 proves fatal for Norfolk rinks

Simon Warnes of Horsford BC and Debbie Sparham, Chris Mann & Jon Sparham of Wymondham made a great start in the National Fours Championships. They opened with a 21-7 win against Barry Thorogood’s Hertfordshire rink and followed that with wins against Devon & West Sussex rinks to win group 2. Steve Easter of Harling and Wymondham’s Roger Steele, Billie Barker & Melvyn Barker also romped through their group with wins against Paul Wright’s Derbyshire rink, Alan Ware’s Hertfordshire rink and Terry Mead's Essex rink. Norfolk champions Lesley Crowe of First Bus, John Jeffery of Wymondham and Hevingham’s David Sharpe & Steve Hall missed out on qualifying despite a win against Ben Pay’s Hampshire rink. Gillian Amos, Rosemary Hall, Laura Hawksworth & Robin Amos of Deaf Sports found themselves in a tough group 7 and also missed out after losing their last game 12-5 against Chris Hopkins’ Northants rink. In the first knock-out round Melvyn Barker’s rink faced John Parnell’s Devon rink and Jon Sparham were up against Ross Martell’s Derbyshire rink. Melvyn Barker’s four achieved a narrow 6-5 win to earn a match against Mike Conroy, Mark Cindery, David Millington-Jones & Antony Rogers of Herefordshire in round three. They were joined in round three by Jon Sparham’s rink who looked every inch potential champions as they beat the Derbyshire rink 21-7 to set up a tasty encounter against the powerful North Yorkshire rink of Bronagh Toleman, Lee Toleman, Danny Langdon & ex Scottish international Lawrence Moffet. Unfortunately Norfolk’s hopes of title glory came to a halt as Jon Sparham’s rink went down by 14-5 to the North Yorks rink and Melvyn Barker’s rink were beaten 16-3 by Herefordshire. The winners of the National Fours title were Adam Easthope, Allan Williams, Craig Strong & Ross Dunkley of West Mids.
