Two of Norfolk’s pairs qualified from the group stages of the National Pairs Championships but were unlucky to find themselves meeting in the first knock-out round. Owen Cranston of County Council & Wymondham’s Chris Mann qualified from group 5 after beating Cornwall’s Martin Boraston & Gary Davey 18-3 and Ed Law & Jeremy Leach of East Sussex 17-2 despite losing 12-3 to group winners Brian & Rob Elmore of Cambridgeshire. Hempnall’s Neil Davidson & Wymondham’s Jack Pye won group 12 with a 17-3 win against Val & Barry Thorogood of Hertfordshire and an 11-5 win against Herefordshire’s Ian Roe & Ian Park. Unfortunately the two Wymondham skips found themselves up against each other in round two with Davidson & Pye emerging winners by 10-4. Round three saw Davidson & Pye’s journey come to end as they were beaten by the eventual champions Ben Holbrook & Mike Clancy of Cheshire. Tony Ottewell & Mike Smail of Forncett were eliminated in a strong group but did beat Somerset’s James Scoins & Dan Winmill 11-7. Defeats against Barry Hedges & Jake Attrill and Worcestershire’s Richard Payne & Jonathon Smith ended their title hopes. The vastly experienced Bob Carter pairing of Nigel Willard & Melly Woods will be disappointed with their third place in group 13 after losing 15-3 to North Yorks’ Danny Langdon & Lee Toleman and 15-6 to Gloucestershire’s Ryan Knight & Ollie Hipkiss. Their only win was a 12-7 result against Alex Gingel & Peter Winter of East Sussex. An all Cheshire final saw Ben Holbrook & Mike Clancy beat Matty Wordon & Paul Clegg 12-7.
