Halvergate began their Bure League season with an 8-2 home win against a strong Watton Expendables side. After their 7-3 defeat at Bob Carter last week Expendables would have hoped for a better result at Halvergate’s Upton venue but it was not to be. Despite the visitor’s team on paper looking the stronger it was the home side that took most of the points on offer as they won three games and lost the other by just one shot. Leading the way were Mike Tate, Ray Lamb & Robbie Lamb with an 18-9 win against Will Townsend, George Hume & Simon Willies. After nine ends it had been a tight game, with Lamb’s triple only 10-9 ahead, but the home triple won the last six ends. Kerry Greenacre, Steven Lamb & Keith Cooke beat Pix Hyam, Kacy Suffolk & Chris Willies by 15-8 in another game that was tight up to the ninth end which saw the home triple just 7-6 up before Cooke’s triple won six of the last seven ends. Their third win was by just 13-12 by Ethan Lamb, Steve Hall & Ryan Fox against Elaine Willies, Joy Townsend & Robin Amos. In this game the Halvergate triple had looked on course for a big win, leading 12-3 after eight ends, before the Robin Amos triple staged a great comeback to cut the deficit to just one shot. Expendables two points were earned by John Jeffery, Chloe Suffolk & Jack Marshall who beat Donna Lamb, Keith Baker & David Lamb. Jack Marshall’s triple shocked the home triple by taking five shots on the opening end and led 15-7 with two ends remaining. David Lamb’s triple then took a full house of six on the penultimate end to cut the deficit to 15-13 but could only score a single on the last end as Marshall’s triple held on to win 15-14.
