The NCSMBA is deeply saddened to learn that Mike Smail of Forncett SMBC has passed away. Mike was a hugely generous man who was always willing to play his part in the administration of short mat bowls at club, league and county level. He stepped up to take on the time consuming position of Norfolk Competition Secretary in 2021 when the vital post was in danger of being left unfilled. He approached the task with determination and did a great job assisted by his wife Jan, despite having no experience of organizing the Norfolk competitions. He held the post until 2025 when illness forced Mike to retire from that position. Mike served various positions in the sport among them Secretary of the Breckland League and Chair of Forncett SMBC. Mike was also a valued member of the Norfolk Over 60’s and used his professional expertise to provide some lovely lunches when visiting teams came to Hingham Sports and Social Club. Mike and Jan also rolled up their sleeves and provided superb lunches when the Hingham venue was used by West Mids to host the British Isles Top Team event some years ago. As a player he was a runner-up in the NCSMBA Mixed Fours in 2021/22 and 2022/23 and always a formidible opponent. Mike Smail was someone who cared deeply about our sport and he will be missed so much by so many. The NCSMBA wish to express their deepest condolences to Jan at this sad time.
