Thorpe Marriott make late push for glory

The battle for the Summer League Division Two title saw Thorpe Marriott make a late push for glory beating Hingham 8-0. Jenny Walker, Trevor Pinchen & John Jarvis opened with a 31-3 win against Will Townsend, Jim Roache & John Chapman and with Mandy Marshall & Ted Griffin joining Jarvis in the second half they beat Keith Thomas’ triple 23-15. With a narrow 10-9 win for Margaret McPherson, Bob McPherson & Kath Frost against Pat Groombridge and a 16-8 win for Sheila Redwood, Mick Harris & Tony Turner also against Pat Groombridge Thorpe Marriott are eight points behind leaders First Bus and both teams have just one game to play. First Bus were forced to settle for a 4-4 draw at Hingham and may regret those dropped points. In the first half Sue Fox, David Sharpe & Lesley Crowe of First Bus beat Eileen Herbert’s triple 26-4 but the home side replied with a 9-8 win for Will Townsend, Jim Roache & Keith Thomas against Bob Oatway’s triple. After the break First Bus celebrated another good win as Elaine Oatway, David Sharpe & Steve Hall beat Jackie Cappell, Bob Lister & Keith Thomas 24-4 but a resounding 26-11 win for Cynthia Powell, Colin Short & Pat Groombridge against Bob Oatway’s triple earned their side a draw. Diss Green are in third place but have not given up snatching the title yet with their final league match at home to Thorpe Marriott. But Diss Green also dropped valuable points at Hingham where they also had a 4-4 draw. Hingham made a flying start to lead 4-0 at the interval after Will Townsend, Jim Roache & Keith Thomas beat Bill Francis 19-11 and Colin Powell, Graham Tweed & Pat Groombridge beat Russell Davidson 15-13. Diss then hit back but it was close as they won both games by just one shot. Graham Mobbs’ triple beat John Higgs 10-9 and Terry Newby’s triple beat Eileen Herbert by 13-12. There was just one match in Division One this week which saw Halvergate make it three wins from three games beating Forncett 8-0 away and scoring 82 shots against 29.
