Wortwell Pairs a success

Last Saturday saw Wortwell SMBC play host to 20 teams all keen on taking home a slice of the £100 prize money from a brand new 2 wood pairs tournament.  Played throughout the day the format of 4 groups of 5 teams resulted in the top team from each group going through to a semi-final. Entries came from far and wide with the organisers praising the likes of Lynn and John Boddye (Walpole Highway) for travelling all the way from Cambridgeshire.  Clubs from Thetford and Thorpe Marriott also arrived keen to do battle being well represented and fielding 3 teams a piece. After the initial round-robin the decks were cleared with semi-finals played over 2 mats watched on by a good audience. The first semi saw Kath Frost & Gavin Gray of Thorpe Marriott play Sheila Rusted & Robert Banbury of Wortwell with the latter winning 6-8. The second semi was Janet Pinchen and Tony Oram of Thorpe Marriott against Lynn Couzins and David Higgins of Jarrolds with the former winning 14-3. The new format then allowed for a 3rd and 4th play-off with David and Lynn beating Kath and Gavin 8-3. Down to the last match, the final.  This was a very close fought affair with Sheila and Robert finally overcoming the pairing of Janet and Tony 6-5. The organisers encouraged by all the positive comments and compliments intend running the 'Cash Pairs' again next year.  In the meantime Wortwell now prepare for their next event on 5th September being the long running ‘Charity Triples’ in aid of Guide Dogs.  To register your interest make contact with Chris Roberts 07771 557 898 or 01986 781 387.
