7 Norfolk bowlers in SMPT UK Open Singles this weekend

This weekend the UK Open Singles takes place is at the Falcon Bowling & Social Club in Chelmsford where seven Norfolk bowlers will be competing. Ireland’s Pauline Beattie is defending the title but England’s Alex Kley will be determined to continue his incredible run of success in major singles events. There are 32 groups in the competition made up of six bowlers in each group. The top two in each group qualifies for the knock-out section of the UK Open Singles. Players finishing in third and fourth places are entered into the knock-out stages of the Plate Competition and players finishing fifth and sixth compete in the Shield section of the event. Wymondham’s Jack Pye has been drawn in Group 17, a group of death, which will see at least one major contender knocked out at an early stage. Jack Pye’s first game is at 9.50am against Ireland’s Gerard Moen followed by a game against Belgium’s Jonathan Payne. Jack’s third game is against a player he knows well from playing in her rink for England at the British Isles Championships, North Yorkshire based Bronagh Toleman. In this event Bronagh is listed as representing Ireland. Jack’s third game at 5.20pm is against Billy Ray. Sunday morning at 10am Jack Pye faces the most successful singles player of recent times, England’s Alex Kley. Wymondham’s AJ Brown is drawn in Group 28 where Glenn Harvey of Ireland will prove tough opposition. Interesting games for AJ are against Shannon Mead of the USA and Dennis Hjoberg of Sweden. Halvergate’s Jason Woods begins his bid for glory against Ireland’s James Rutledge in Group 4 that includes top class English opposition in Steve Buckett and Peter Hore. Hempnall’s Neil Davidson is in Group 7 where he will meet Craig Burgess on Saturday afternoon after facing players from Belgium and Sweden in the morning. Karl Newby of Carleton Rode is in Group 31 and opens with a game against Northern Ireland’s Rodger Armour. Wymondham’s John Jeffery is in Group 29 which includes games against Bolivia’s Mario Iniguez Cueto and Yorkshire’s Lee Toleman. David Blundell of Wortwell is in Group 14 that includes Jorgen Karlsson of Sweden.
