Wales win SMPT World Cup in Chelmsford

Wales won the SMPT Bowls Trader World Cup in Chelmsford on Friday beating Ireland 5-1 in the final by winning three of the four games. Arwel Morgan beat David McBride 12-11, Andrew Hudson beat Glenn Harvey 14-7 and Richard Arran won by 15-5 against Paul Doherty. Only Gary McNabb won for Ireland beating Stephen Williams 10-9. Defending champions England failed to make it through Group One losing by 4-2 against eventual group winners Norway and also losing 4-2 against group runners-up Scotland. Group Two was won by the Rest of the World team with Belgium second and Sweden third. Ireland won Group Three with Wales in second place and Canada third. In the semi-finals Wales beat Norway 5-1 with Arwel Morgan in great form beating Gunnar Frantzen 17-5. The other semi-final saw Ireland beat the Rest of the World team 5-1 with Glenn Harvey leading the way beating Emily Poulter 17-4.
