Norfolk Over 60's win this years Challenge Match

Norfolk Over 60’s entertained Friends of Essex for the second leg of their annual friendly challenge match at Hingham defending a 78-50 points lead from the opening leg played in Laindon in June.  It proved to be a difficult start for the visitors with coach problems seeing them arrive late which pushed the start time of the match back by an hour and a half. Organisers agreed to reduce the number of sessions from eight to six to enable the match to finish on time with each triple and pair playing three games each instead of the normal four games. Friends of Essex made a solid start winning five of the eight opening triples games which saw Trish Taylor, Colin Hayman and George Hume the only three Norfolk skips to taste victory. The pairs then took to the mats for the second session which was dominated by Norfolk winning six of the eight games and scoring 103 shots against 56. This proved to be the story of the day as Norfolk’s pairs collected 40 points from their three sessions while Norfolk’s triples added another 20 points in a 60-36 points victory on the day, 487-363 on shots. Maximum points were gained by five of Norfolk’s pairs with Kerry Greenacre & Selwyn Goldsmith winning their games by 25-0, 11-8 & 10-5, Lynn & John Boddye winning by 9-7, 17-3 & 17-3, Will Townsend & David Aldous winning 18-5, 19-10 & 14-10, Val Easter & Gavin Gray winning 15-6, 8-7 & 10-6 and Pat Hall & Tony Ottewell winning by 10-8, 14-9 & 15-8. The aggregate score was 138-86 on points to Norfolk and 1,054-824 on shots. As always the most important aspect of the day was that both teams enjoyed some superb games and the company of each other. Norfolk Over 60’s Organiser Teresa Goldsmith thanked John Jefferies for umpiring, Joan Costello for running the raffle and Jan Smail for keeping everyone supplied with teas, coffees & biscuits in the kitchen.
