Jack, Morgan and Gavin win Bure Triples

Hevingham hosted the Bure Triples Championships where a super strong line-up provided a feast of top class short mat bowls for a great turn-out of spectators. The event provided a brilliant finale with both Gavin Gray, Morgan Warnes & Jack Pye of Bob Carter and David Lamb, Paul Baker & Keith Cooke of Halvergate going in to the last session on maximum points with their triples set to meet on mat two. Both triples had been in unstoppable form all night and it proved a fitting climax to an evening which had seen recently crowned World Champions and England internationals playing bowls at a level that most can just dream of. Halvergate took shot on the opening end of the vital last end which they needed to win to lift the title. The Carter triple had established a shot difference of +23 over their previous games while Halvergate had +13 shots so a draw would be enough for Jack Pye’s triple. The next two ends went Carter’s way leaving them 4-1 up at the halfway stage but Halvergate recovered and were just one shot down going into the last end. A tremendous end of bowls, with some superb woods played by both triples, finished with Jack Pye’s triple taking one shot to win 5-3 and lift the title. Defending champions Alfie Woods, AJ Pye & Jason Woods of Bob Carter faced Pye’s triple and Cooke’s triple in their first two games and defeats against them both left them out of the running but wins in their last two games saw them claim third position on the night. Hevingham’s triple of Pat Hall, Peter Grundy & Marjorie Hall were well aware of the standard of opposition but fought bravely all night collecting a 6-3 win against Robin Amos’s Watton Expendables triple in their second game and keeping the shots down in their other games to finish fourth. The Bure Pairs Championships will be played at Watton on Thursday 23rd April where Bob Carter and England bowlers Morgan Warnes and Gary Best will be defending their title. The Bure Singles Championships take place at Halvergate’s Upton Village Hall venue on Thursday 30th April where Jason Woods of Bob Carter and England is the defending champion. Both events are scheduled to begin at 7.15pm. The very small, but incredibly strong Bure League, currently provides a great opportunity to see some of the very best short mat bowling talent in action.
