Shropshire win National Pairs

The second day of the National Championships saw the National Pairs played to a finish with Cheshire and Shropshire represented in the final. Chris Williams & Chris Shakeshaft of Shropshire lifted the title with Dan Rigby & Matty Worden of Cheshire the runners-up. In the group stages two of Norfolk’s pairs made it through to the knock-out stages. Morgan Warnes & Gary Best were unstoppable in Group 10 winning all their games which included a stunning 13-7 win against the highly rated Northants pair of Ed Sawbridge & Stephen McAlister. Morgan was again repeating the form that saw her reach the National Singles quarter-final stage the day before. In the last 32 round they defeated Thelma & David Hacker of East Sussex 9-6 and in the last 16 stage they beat Devon’s Rose Morrison & John Steer 7-6. Kent’s Michael Doorey & Danny Hogben provided tough opposition in the quarter-finals and after a close game the Kent pair edged over the line by 11-9. David Lamb & Ryan Fox came second in Group 13 with an 11-8 win against Mikey Ivings & James Trott of Devon and a 12-9 win against Hampshire’s Martyn Dubb & Mark Hollis. In the last 32 round they played Cheshire’s Dan Rigby & Matty Worden who beat the Halvergate pair by 9-6. Jack Marshall & Karl Newby finished third in Group 11 with a win against June Crowther & Ben Holbrook by 7-4 gaining their only points. In Group 6 Simon Warnes & Trevor Brown lost their three matches.
