Singles crown goes to Greater Manchester

The first day of the main National Championships saw Peter Roberts of Greater Manchester win the coveted National Singles title beating Cheshire’s Matty Worden 11-6 in the final. In the semi-finals an all family affair saw Peter Roberts beat Steven Roberts 12-5 while Matty Worden beat Ben Pay of Hampshire 11-5. Morgan Warnes was Norfolk’s most successful bowler on the day reaching the quarter-finals. Morgan won Group 15 in which she beat two times National Singles champion David Coultas of Humberside 13-5 and also beat Worcestershire’s Dave Grove by 20-1. In the last 32 round Morgan beat Somerset’s Andrew Church 13-7 before claiming the scalp of Kent and England player Jody Frampton in the last 16 beating him by 8-4. Morgan finally exited at the quarter-final stage losing to Matty Worden by 8-3 but can be proud to have reached this late stage representing Norfolk. Norfolk’s other three entries failed to progress beyond the group stages. Ryan Fox was unlucky not to progress in Group 16 after beating Ben Pay of Hampshire 10-8 and Sarah Briscoe of Humberside 18-3. Three bowlers all finished on four points in the group but a 14-4 loss to Cheshire’s Andy Carr left Ryan in third place on shots. Neil Davidson finished third in Group 12 with a 10-9 win against Surrey’s Mark Jones earning him his two points. Jack Marshall played in Group 4 and finished fourth after his day started with a heavy 16-3 defeat against Steven Roberts of Humberside. Jack earned two points with a 7-6 win against Alan Spicer of Hertfordshire.
