Lowest ever entry for Mixed Fours

This season saw the Norfolk Mixed Fours County Championships, which also doubles up as the National Mixed Fours Championship qualifier, attract the lowest entry ever with just two rinks taking part. Because of this it was not viable to hold the event at Norfolk’s county venue at Hingham and a toss of a coin saw Forncett St Mary chosen as the venue. It was decided that both rinks would play each other three times over seven ends. Jenny Walker of Thorpe Marriott, Donna Lamb, Ryan Fox & David Lamb of Halvergate were the defending champions and in the first game led 5-3 going into the final end. But Forncett’s Jan Smail, Mike Smail, Gill Coleman & Tony Ottewell took two shots to force a 5-5 draw. The second game was again a tight affair with the rinks level at 5-5 with one end remaining. A single to Lamb’s rink saw them grab a 6-5 win to put them into the driving seat. The third and final game saw Tony Ottewell’s rink leading 6-5 going into the last end but a single to Lamb’s rink earned them a 6-6 draw and a place in the National finals. For the first few years the Mixed Fours was purely a National Qualifier event but with entry numbers growing year on year the NCSMBA Management Committee upgraded the event to a County Championship. With this season's entry of just two rinks there is now bound to be a question mark over the future status of this event which the vast majority of even Norfolk County Squad players choose not to enter.
