Halvergate & Hevingham progress in Norwich Cup

The tie of the round in the Norwich Cup was Halvergate v Wymondham and it was no surprise that it went to the wire. The first two sessions were shared with Ryan Fox, Ray Lamb & Robbie Lamb winning 12-2 and Jackie Smith & David Lamb winning 8-7 for Halvergate while Wymondham replied with a 7-5 win by Irma Lowe, John Jeffery & Jon Sparham and an 11-3 win by Roger Steele & Chris Mann. Halvergate gained a two point lead after the break as Donna Lamb, Roy Walker & Steven Lamb won 9-4 and Robbie Lamb’s triple drew 6-6 with Jon Sparham’s triple. A shared final session was enough for Halvergate as David Knights & Keith Cooke stormed to an 11-1 win against Pat Saunders & Jack Pye while Wymondham’s Roger Steele & Chris Mann produced their second win of the night by 13-6 against Jackie Smith & David Lamb. Hevingham’s pairs got them through a tricky Norwich Cup encounter at Thorpe Marriott with four wins from four games that earned them a place in the quarter-finals.. The home side were on top in the triples and a great opening session saw Ted Redwood’s triple beat Maurice Kemp 7-4 and George Clarke’s triple beat Alan Bunn 7-6 to give them a 4-0 points lead. This was immediately wiped out though when the pairs entered the fray as Pat Williamson & Steve Hall beat Jenny Walker & John Jarvis 12-5 and Eddie Hayward & David Sharpe beat Sheila Redwood & Richard Perkins 10-4. This left the match finely balanced at 4-4 at half time but with Hevingham nine shots ahead. Thorpe Marriott took a 7-5 points lead after the next session of triples with George Clarke winning 6-4 while Ted Redwood’s triple were held to a 5-5 draw by Hevingham’s Alan Bunn. This left the final pairs session deciding the outcome and Hevingham picked the perfect time to turn up the heat with Steve Hall’s pair winning 11-3 and David Sharpe’s pair winning 11-2 to complete an interesting night of cup action in the Norwich Cup.
