Second half surge sees Halvergate through

Thorpe Marriott entertained Halvergate in the second round of the Norwich Cup and by the interval things were looking good for the home side as they led 6-2 on points. Richard Perkins, Trevor Pinchen & Kath Frost had opened with a 7-3 win against Robin Amos while Mandy Marshall, Ted Redwood & John Jarvis had beaten Robbie Lamb’s triple 8-4. Janet Pinchen & George Clarke continued the good work with a 7-6 pairs win against Jackie Smith & Keith Cooke before Donna & David Lamb finally got some points on the board for Halvergate beating Sylvia & Tony Turner 11-4. Obviously stung by their lack of success in the first half Halvergate’s triples returned to the fray with renewed vigour knowing that a repeat of their previous results would mean an early bath. Gary High, Steven Lamb & Robin Amos turned up the heat against John Jarvis and were rewarded with an 11-3 win while Eve Sole, Ray Lamb & Robbie Lamb won 10-5 against Kath Frost’s triple. This left the match level on points at 6-6 with just the second pairs session to play but Halvergate now held an eleven shot lead which would be vital if the last session was shared. Donna & David Lamb picked up where they left off in their previous outing as they swept Janet Pinchen & George Clarke aside winning 10-2. Jackie Smith & Keith Cooke were involved in their second close game of the tie but this time emerged with a 7-7 draw to see Halvergate over the line with a 9-7 points win and safely into the next round.
