Sparham's rink reach quarter-finals in National Fours

Debbie Sparham, Simon Warnes, Chris Mann & Jon Sparham started the National Fours well winning Group 15 ahead of Graham James’ Devon rink with three straight wins of 10-3, 10-8 & 8-4. Two of the other Norfolk rinks also made it through to the Last 32 by finishing as runners-up in their respective groups. Kerry Greenacre, Neil Davidson, Gary Best & Keith Cooke were beaten by Group 12 winners, Jason McLean’s Hampshire rink, but wins against fours from Surrey & North Yorkshire proved enough for them to progress into the knock-out rounds. Bob Carter’s Steve Bridge, Jason Woods, Jamie Forster & Simon Willies lost by one shot to Craig Burgess’ Essex rink but beat fours from Suffolk and Gloucestershire to make it through safely from Group 10. The only casualty in the group stages were Nigel Willard, David Lamb, John Turner & Melvin Woods in Group 16 which was won by a Devon rink with a West Mids rink second. Simon Willies’ rink then faced AJ Brown’s highly rated Oxfordshire rink and despite a fine performance went down by 8-7. Jon Sparham’s rink though made it through to the last 16 with a 13-9 win against Steve Puttock’s Hampshire rink. Keith Cooke’s rink were also celebrating success as they beat Andrew Beard’s East Sussex four 8-3 to make it two Norfolk rinks still in the mix. The Last 16 round saw Keith Cooke’s rink facing Peter Roberts, Danial Sands, Bent Neilsen & Bill Burn of Cheshire but visions of making the quarter-finals evaporated as they lost by 11-2. Debbie Sparham, Simon Warnes, Chris Mann & Jon Sparham though claimed a major scalp as they beat Oxfordshire’s Geoff Cross, Roger Wiggins, Gareth Davis & AJ Brown by 9-4 to move into the quarter-finals. There they faced Jack Rollings’ West Sussex rink and in a tight low scoring game they finally went out by just 5-4. Jack Rolling's four made it to the final where they were beaten 10-4 by Nick Tideswell, Alan Williams, Craig Strong & Ross Dunkley of West Mids.
